Warm-up America   Killeen/Ft.Hood Texas


We make and donate afghans to injured soldiers, Veterans and the homeless (Veterans make up 11% of the American population and 1/4 of them are homeless). These blankets provide warmth and comfort to the individulas that receive them. These people are serving or have served our country. This is just one way of giving back to them.



We are a non-profit organization, run entirely by volunteers and donations.

OUR MISSION
Our goal is to make and donate afghans to; soldiers injured in the Iraq war (or any war),  Veterans and homeless shelters. We knit and crochet 7x9 inch squares.
We then sew 49 squares together to make an adult afghan that is about the size of a twin size blanket. One scane of yarn costs aproximatey $2.50 and it takes 8 scanes to make one afgahn.

 I donate once per month to Darnall Army Community Hospital, The VA Hospital in Temple and various food banks and shelters.

Presenly we generate aproximately 10 afghans per month that are shared amogst these groups. Our goal is to make 20 afgans per month. We need donations and volunteers.
(*Remember when you make squares or entire afghans to use washable yarn, make your stitches somewhat tight (for warmth) and use "happy colors")


DONATIONS:
As you know, we are a non-profit organization dedicated to providing our members with news and insight. We gladly accept and appreciate any and all donations.
We are particularly in need of yarn, hooks, and tapestry needles. We also need monetary donations to purchase office supplies and advertising. Each Afghan costs $20.00 in yarn, to make. They must then be delivered and sometimes mailed to locations.

**We have 2 drop locations for yarn:
Memorial Baptist Church on Trimmier in Killeen and 58th St Chapel on Fort Hood. (If you are not in the area contact me for alternatives.)

VOLUNTEERS:
We are also in need of volunteers:
If you can knit or crochet, we need 7x9 inch squares. It takes 49 squares to make one adult afghan.  Volunteers can make entire afghans that are 49 x 73 inches. We also need people to sew squares together. Volunteers are also needed to help make afgahn deliveries each month. If you go to a VA center in Texas on a regular basis, this might be something that would work out well for you. 



**Warm-up America is a nation-wide group, that encourages volunteers to start small local chapters to contact them go to www.warmupamerica.com. Our local chapter serves Killeen, Ft.Hood, Temple, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights and surrounding areas.
